Work Progressing On The DeKalb Library Expansion

The new edition of the DeKalb Public Library continues to be constructed.

Though the $25.3 million expansion is on track to be done mid-December; the total renovation of the library is projected to be done August 2016.

With accessibility being one of the biggest improvements to be added to the library, other innovations include self-checkout stations, recycled rubber flooring and a new elevator.

The new expansion also gives the library the chance to expand on space which includes larger meeting areas and more offices.

The new children’s floor has been upgraded to become more interactive for kids by adding a Lego wall, quiet reading room, an arts and craft room and even a preschool room called the “Tree Room,” which is filled with toys and activities for younger children.

Even with all of the additions, architects have continued a style similar to the historic library for the architecture of the new building.

The state contributed $11.6 million for the expansion. The rest of the funding for the project is local: the city of DeKalb pitched in two million dollars in TIF funds and levied bonds. The library had a million dollars in reserves and was able to borrow three million dollars from three local banks. They'll pay the bank loans back by selling naming rights for areas throughout the building.
