Observers are beginning to wander if the Illinois governor and legislative leaders can reach a deal after failing to agree on a budget.
The Democrat-controlled General Assembly and GOP Governor Bruce Rauner have different policy philosophies. But Republican State Representative Dan Brady says there may be one or two things Democrats can accept in return for revenue increases.
"I think the component that I can see that has the greatest potential is probably workers compensation and some form of causation,” Brady said. “I don't see other components of what the Governor has proposed for his turnaround agenda, at least in the present environment we're in, being advanced."
Brady says Republicans do not support any revenue enhancement that looks like the income tax that expired and created part of the budget hole, and he acknowledges most of the Turnaround Agenda is unpopular with Democrats. But Brady points out Governor Bruce Rauner said during his campaign he might be okay with a service tax.
That might convince some Democrats to agree to a worker’s comp overhaul.
