Northern Illinois makes pitch for piece of federal transportation pie

Leaders from throughout northern Illinois pitched their most important transportation projects to two Congressmen yesterday. Republicans Don Manzullo and Bobby Schilling will recommend priorities for federal transportation funding to Governor Pat Quinn’s office.

Estimates now at $53 million stolen from Dixon

The city of Dixon may be out 20-million dollars more than originally thought in the case against its former comptroller. Federal prosecutors have now charged Rita Crundwell with stealing 53-million dollars over the past 22 years. In the original complaint against Crundwell, she was accused of embezzling an estimated 30-million since 2006 to “support her lavish lifestyle.”

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn wants state institutions, such as Northern Illinois University, to contribute to their workers' pensions.  Currently, the state pays the employer share of contributions.   Quinn's plan would slowly shift the responsibility for paying the "normal cost of pensions" to universities, community colleges and school districts.

Winnebago-Boone courts next for cameras and microphones

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride was the keynote speaker at the Illinois News Broadcasters Association's spring 2012 convention.

The 17th Judicial Circuit, comprising Winnebago and Boone Counties in northern Illinois, will be the next courts to permit news media cameras and recording devices during trials.

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride announced the action Saturday during an address to the Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention in Macomb. He said the order will be issued today.
