Laurent House

Frank Lloyd Wright Trust

Two new road trip itineraries in Illinois will feature buildings designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who spent the first two decades of his career based in Chicago and Oak Park.

One of the tours heads west across northern Illinois, beginning with four sites in Chicago and two in Oak Park – including the Wright Home and Studio, where he experimented with many of his design ideas – where Wright played a role in creating the building.

It’s been one year since Rockford’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home opened to the public. This weekend, the Laurent House will celebrate the anniversary and Wright’s 148th birthday.

Visitors to Winnebago County spent more than $319 million dollars last year at hotels, restaurants and other local businesses. According to a news release from the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, that's down slightly from 2012.

Tourism officials say there were 6.7 million visitors in the region during 2013, up slightly from the year before.

Laurent House Opening Date Set

Good news came in twos today for Rockford's Laurent House, the only home Frank Lloyd Wright designed specifically for wheelchair accessibility. The house has been named to the National Register of Historic Places. And the Laurent House Foundation, the not-for-profit group that purchased the home earlier this year, has announced the date it will open as a museum -- June 8th, 2013, Wright's 146th birthday.
