Dean Dairy

The milk giant Dean Foods is closing one of its Illinois facilities this year.

The Texas-based corporation's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter says 131 people will lose their jobs when the Huntley dairy plant and office close in September. The layoffs will occur Sept. 14-28, The Northwest Herald reported.

Employees of the Huntley plant expressed disappointment, but declined to comment to the newspaper.

Got milk? If so, do you know what kind of milk you have?

A new Illinois law will help you be sure.

Retail dairy cases have several different kinds of milk these days. There are various types that come from cows, along with almond milk, soy milk and maybe even camel milk.

The new law that takes effect Jan. 1 will require any milk that does not come from cattle needs to be labeled as such.

Milk may not be as effective as experts thought in preventing bone fracture and maintaining bone health.

That's according to a recent study in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers found that sugars in milk may lead to increased mortality in men and women.

However, the authors say the study is observational and not meant to draw causal conclusions.
