President Obama visits Colorado in wake of shooting

The scene was reverent at Sunday's vigil for the victims of Friday's mass shooting in Colorado. Applause broke out through the standing throngs as military personnel made their way to the front. Twelve lit candles were placed along the edge of a large metal sculpture in front of the crowd to honor the 12 who lost their lives at the Century 16 movie theater, as well-armed snipers stood on the tops of buildings nearby.

GOP freshman gives qualified thumbs-up to President Obama

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL)

Northern Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger says President Obama has "been aggressive" when protecting Americans from terrorism.  The freshman Republican cites the Obama administration's increase in the use of drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen. 

Kinzinger spoke a day after U.S. intelligence officials announced they foiled an alleged attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound airliner.  But in an interview with WNIJ, Kinzinger stressed he has "fundamental disagreements" with the administration's handling of Afghanistan.

President's State-of-the-Union Address

On Tuesday evening, President Obama delivers his State of the Union address.  Facing into an election year, the President is expected to continue pushing Congress on his economic agenda.  The GOP response will be given by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.  WNIJ will have live coverage of the President's address, beginning at 8pm.  NPR's Melissa Block will host.  She'll be joined in the studio by NPR National Political Correspondent Mara Liasson.
