Illinois Primary: Live Blog And Results

Mar 20, 2012

With a decisive victory in Illinois, Mitt Romney is firmly in the driver's seat of the Republican presidential nomination contest.

In a victory speech in Schaumburg, Ill., the former Massachusetts governor thanked his Republican opponents, but very quickly pivoted to the general election against President Obama.

"It's time to say this word," said Romney. "Enough. We've had enough... We need a president who believes in us."

This Romney speech even sounded different. With Romney restating the big ideals of his campaign, it sounded like an acceptance speech.

A number of candidates are running unopposed in their party’s primary.  In some cases, there is no one running in the other party’s primary, either. That could mean that, for some candidates, the fall election will be a mere formality.

Thousands of caregivers, child protection workers, and police officers represented by the AFSCME will hold a statewide “Day of Action” Thursday. The events will demonstrate opposition to Governor Pat Quinn’s budget cuts.  Employees of the Singer Mental Health Center will hold a protest Thursday afternoon at Rockford's Zeke Giorgi Center. The Singer facility is targeted for closure.
