Plowing crews are hard at work attempting to deal with the continuous snowfall across the WNIJ area.

However, the snowfall wasn't equally distributed.  DeKalb received about 5 inches of snow, while Rockford and Freeport recieved half a foot. The National Weather Service reports snowfall was much higher in other areas, with 10 inches in Aurora, and 8 inches near Naperville. Around 7 to 11 inches were predicted to fall overall.

Severe winter weather is expected across the WNIJ listening area starting tonight.

The storm system is coming down from Montana and is expected to arrive around the dinner hour this evening.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for DeKalb, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, McHenry, LaSalle, Grundy, Kane, and Kendall Counties from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday.  Furthermore, Rockford, South Beloit, and Beloit already have declared snow emergencies.  NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste says to expect heavy snowfall overall.

Power outages and downed trees caused problems Wednesday night across northern Illinois as Winnebago, Boone, JoDaviess, and Stephenson Counties were hit by strong winds and heavy rain. 

The National Weather Service reports more than five inches of rain and winds of more than 50 miles per hour in Winnebago and parts of Boone County. The performance at Rock Valley College Starlight Theatre was cancelled due to the storm threats.

Snow On The Way For Northern Illinois

The National Weather Service in Chicago issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Snow, which is in effect until 1 P.M. today.  

They predicted snow developing late Sunday evening and continuing through much of Monday morning. Forecasters expect accumulations of 3-4 inches.

Visibility will be reduced during heavier snowfall. Plan on difficult driving conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibility.

Severe Weather, Warnings In Northern Illinois

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado warning is in effect for LaSalle County until 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect for Northeastern DeKalb County, Southwestern Lake County, Kane County, Northwestern DuPage County, Southern McHenry County, and Northwestern Cook County until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.  

The National Weather Service says debris can be life-threatening to people without shelter. It encourages people to take cover immediately.
