Kishwaukee Community College cancelling classes after noon Thursday

In preparation for the first major winter storm of the 2012/2013 season, the City of Rockford Public Works Department is issuing a Snow Emergency Declaration.  Odd/Even parking restrictions will be in place.  In Wisconsin, Beloit and Janesville have also has declared snow emergencies.

 Wednesday night's thunderstorms brought lightning, heavy rains, and strong winds to northern Illinois. Wind gusts hit 70 mph just south of Rockford, and 60 mph in DeKalb. The storm drenched Elgin with over an inch of rain in 20 minutes. A ComEd spokesperson says the storms resulted in more than 160,000 outages in northern Illinois.  

Predicted temperatures in the 90s have prompted some local communities to open cooling sites for local residents.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 90 degrees today, 92 on Saturday and 86 on Sunday.

Cooling sites offer air-conditioned relief during periods of excessive heat or when an excessive heat advisory or warning is issued by the National Weather Service.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and family members to ensure they are safe and as comfortable as possible
