The Lee County Board recently approved refits to the Mendota Hills Wind Farm.

The farm is owned by Dallas-based Leeward Renewable Energy, and operated at a deficit for the past four years.

The Lee County Zoning Board started the process of approving upgrades to the Mendota Hills Wind Farm.

The project involves tearing down the farm’s current set of wind turbines and replacing about half of them with more larger, more efficient models.  It would also expand the farm’s borders.

Illinois wind farms will bring more than 6 billion dollars to the state economy over their lifespan.  That’s according to a new study by Illinois State University.  Researchers factored in property taxes, jobs, and payment to land owners.  David Loomis, Director of the Center for Renewable Energy, says jobs are particularly affected.

"During the construction phase, there's a lot of activity and people get employed.  There are about 2,500 jobs that are supported during that construction phase.  And about 226 long term jobs coming during operational phase," he says.

Protecting Birds And Bats On Wind Farms

Do you have any ideas about protecting birds and bats from wind turbines in Illinois, Wisconsin and six other Midwestern states?

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public input as it works with the states to develop a plan for habitat conservation while promoting clean energy.

Some species of bats are particularly vulnerable to striking turbines at wind energy facilities. Fish and Wildlife representative Georgia Parham says one solution may be for wind energy companies to change how they operate turbines.

The Whiteside County portion of a proposed wind farm near Deer Grove won approval Tuesday from the county board, while the Ogle County Board okayed a special-use permit for a wind farm near Baileyville.

Subject to conditions, Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power can build seven turbines in far southeastern Whiteside County. The board also approved two others, but officials said those need to get the nod from the Deer Grove village board.
