Archbishop Says Protecting Earth From Climate Change Is 'Moral Obligation'

WBEZ

Chicago’s archbishop says protecting the earth from climate change due to pollution is a moral obligation.

Archbishop Blase Cupich toured Old St. Mary’s School in the South Loop last week with the Environment Protection Agency’s top official. There, he talked about the need to push back on smog and other factors that are contributing to climate change.

Cupich says the church’s stance is in line with its pro-life philosophy.

“The poorest of the poor of the world are the first who are impacted by the degradation that goes on in the environment today,” Cupich said. “We have an option for the poor. We make sure that we give them a place at the table.”

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy got a first-hand look at the Catholic school’s roof-top solar panels. She says reducing energy costs allows schools to hire more teachers.
