The impending winter storm moving into northern Illinois this afternoon has prompted some area schools to announce early closings.
Northern Illinois University is closing all of its campuses -- DeKalb, Rockford, Naperville, Hoffman Estates and Lorado Taft -- at 3 p.m. today.
Rockford Career College closes at 4:00 p.m.
The Rockford Park District has announced closings and cancellations at the following locations:
- Snow Park at Alpine Hills: Closed tonight
- Riverview Ice House: Closing at 5 p.m.
- Carlson Ice Arena: Closing at 5 p.m.
- Sapora Playworld: Closing at 5 p.m.
- Nicholas Conservatory& Gardens: Closed at 3 p.m.
- UW Health Sports Factory closing at 4:30 p.m.; Rockford Volleyball practice and adult basketball games are cancelled.
- Washington Park Community Center closing at 6 p.m.; the teen evening program is cancelled.
- Indoor Sports Center at Mercyhealth Sportscore closing at 4 p.m.; the high school boys soccer game is cancelled.
- The Lewis Lemon Community Center after-school and teen evening programs are cancelled.
After-school activities in the Belvidere School District are cancelled.
All afternoon and evening activities in the DeKalb School District are cancelled.
The Winnebago School District is closing at 1:30 today and canceling all extracurricular activities.
The Freeport School District released high-school and middle-school students at 11:30 this morning; elementary schools will be released at 12:30 p.m., and there will be no afternoon preschool.
All Dixon Public Schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. today, and all evening activities are cancelled.
Sterling Public Schools will dismiss one hour early today.
Rock Falls Elementary Schools will close one hour early today.
All Harlem School District activities are cancelled today, but Y-Care will remain open until parents pick up their children.
All Rock Valley College locations will close beginning at 3 p.m.
Sauk Valley Community College is closing at 2 p.m. today and canceling all evening classes.
Womanspacein Rockford is closing at 2 p.m. today.
All FHN Memorial Hospital and other Freeport locations remain open, but all rural locations are closing at 2 p.m. today. They include:
