Cops And Doughnuts Connect For Special Olympics Charity

The fabled connection between cops and doughnuts takes a charitable turn today as police departments team up with a national chain in the 14th annual “Cop on a Rooftop” fundraiser.

Officers are taking part by perching on the rooftops of Dunkin’ Donut stores in numerous communities throughout northern Illinois to raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics.

They started their vigils at 5 a.m. today and will continue throughout the day. Contributors will receive a coupon good for a free doughnut. The officers also are offering various fund-raising souvenirs for sale, including travel coffee cups, T-shirts and caps.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $39 million over 30 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments.

Each year, more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and to the State Summer Games in Normal in June. It is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.
