Elgin Escape Prompts Calls For Review Of Transfer Procedures

ilga.org

A northern Illinois lawmaker wants an investigation of procedures at state-run mental health facilities. Representative Anna Moeller, an Elgin Democrat, is asking the Auditor General to look at rules concerning prisoner transfers at these facilities.

The Daily Herald reports, the move is in response to the escape of a prisoner who was being transported from the Elgin Mental Health Center back in July. The escape resulted in a manhunt, which ended after the suspect tried to hail a cab.

In a statement, Moeller said "An alarming security breach happened here, and the public, a month later, is still in the dark as to how this occurred."

Officials with the Elgin facility did not return calls for comment.
