Events Kick Off For Sycamore Pumpkin Festival

This year’s theme is “Parade of Pumpkins.” It’s Sycamore’s 55th year of hosting the festivities.

Some big events include the fireworks show, which happens every fifth year.

Organizers say about 130 entries are registered for the parade, which will be Sunday.

The grand marshal is Orion Samuelson, a well-known Chicago radio host with ties to agriculture.

Pumpkin Festival Committee president Jerry Malmassari says Samuelson’s background makes him an ideal choice for the role.

“This is a rural community. He relates well to people, has a lot of friends here, and we thought he would just make a good representation," Malmassari said.

He also says many people are involved in putting together activities.

“It incorporates every aspect of the community. The churches get involved, all the service clubs like I say get involved," Malmassari said.

Pumpkin check-in took place Wednesday afternoon at the DeKalb County courthouse lawn.
