Former Student Shot After Gunfire Exchange With Officer At Dixon High School

Students at Dixon High School are safe after a shooting in the school around 8:00 this morning. Police say a 19-year old former student entered the school with a gun and fired shots near the gym, where graduation practice was taking place.

He was pursued by the school’s resource officer, who shot him in the shoulder outside of the building. The shooter was taken into custody. Dixon Police Chief Steven Howell credits active shooter training with preventing casualties.

“While removing students from the various classrooms,” Howell said at a news conference, “responding officers found the staff, students had barricaded the doors to the classrooms with desks, bookcases, and other objects, per the training that they had received.”

Dixon police say the resource officer is on paid administrative leave and local law enforcement is conducting an investigation.
