Student Shot After Gunfire Exchange With Officer At Dixon High School

City of Dixon

Students at Dixon High School are safe after a shooting in the school around 8:00 Wednesday morning. Police say a 19-year-old student entered the school with a gun and fired shots near the gym, where graduation practice was taking place.

He was pursued by the school’s resource officer, who shot him in the shoulder outside of the building. The shooter was taken into custody. Dixon Police Chief Steven Howell credits active shooter training with preventing casualties.

“While removing students from the various classrooms,” Howell said at a news conference, “responding officers found the staff, students had barricaded the doors to the classrooms with desks, bookcases, and other objects, per the training that they had received.”

Dixon police say the resource officer is on paid administrative leave and local law enforcement is conducting an investigation.

Chief Howell says the school resource officer saved lives when he confronted the armed student.

Correction: An earlier version of this story identified the shooter as a former student. School officials have confirmed he was a senior at the high school and eligible for graduation.
