Goodwill Offers Free Tax Prep Starting This Month

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is again offering free income tax preparation and filing. It's the seventh year for the program. It starts Jan. 15th and will continue through April 18th. The sites offer free tax assistance for families with income less than $50,000 and individuals with income less than $25,000.

Jason Haller is the financial programs manager at Goodwill of Northern Illinois. He says this year there will be a free tax drop off service at the Mission Services Center and East High School sites in Rockford where taxpayers can leave tax documents and pick them up one week later.

"Folks have to spend a lot of money at paid preparers to get their taxes done. When you are low income, that is a lot of money out of your pocket," Haller said.

Last year, Goodwill's tax sites served 2,402 individuals and returned more than $2.5 million in refunds.
