Groups Owed Money By Illinois Seek Time To Appeal Lawsuit

A coalition of social-service providers owed money by Illinois state government is seeking more time to appeal its lawsuit to the Illinois Supreme Court.

Andrea Durbin, chairwoman of Pay Now Illinois, said that Thursday was the deadline to appeal a lawsuit against the state to the high court. But the coalition petitioned to postpone the deadline to Sept. 30.

Pay Now Illinois filed a lawsuit in Cook County seeking payment of bills because Illinois was without a budget for two years. Lawmakers enacted one this month. Durbin says she was told Sept. 30 is the deadline in the budget law for paying past-due bills.

The coalition announced Thursday that Circuit Judge Robert LeChien dismissed this week a similar lawsuit the group filed in St. Clair County in February.
