NIU Forms Presidential Search Committee

The Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees has approved a 28-person Presidential Search Advisory Committee. President John G. Peters announced during his State of the University Address that he will step aside June 30, 2013.

According to an NIU spokesman andNIU Today, the presidential search will begin immediately. The board expects to have a new president in place on or before July 1, 2013.

RESOLUTION REGARDING THE SELECTION OF AN EXECUTIVE SEARCH FIRM AND THE APPOINTMENT OF A PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH ADVISORY COMMITTEE

WHEREAS, Dr. John G. Peters has served with distinction for more than 12 years as the President of Northern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, under President Peters leadership of the University has gained national and international recognition for its student focus and engagement, excellence in faculty research and teaching and successful commitments to regional economic development and community service; and

WHEREAS, President Peters has announced his intention to step down as the 11th President of Northern Illinois University effective June 30, 2013; and

WHEREAS, by statute it is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to establish and coordinate the search and selection of the President of Northern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, the Northern Illinois Constitution specifically outlines a process for the selection of selected members of a search committee to advise the Board; and

WHEREAS, the new President will be charged with enhancing and achieving strategic goals in the areas of student, faculty and facility excellence, as well as managing emerging challenges that affect higher education; and

WHEREAS, the Presidential Search Advisory Committee (“PSAC”) has been named and its members have been selected in an effort to obtain broad representation and diversity in membership; and

WHEREAS, a timeline for the search has been created, and a charge to PSAC has been developed;

WHEREAS, the executive committee has interviewed several nationally recognized and state-authorized executive search firms; and

WHEREAS, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees unanimously recommends that the executive search firm of Parker Executive Search be appointed by the Board to provide professional search services for the selection of the twelfth president of Northern Illinois University; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University authorizes the formation of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee to advise the Board related to and submit candidates for the position of the 12th President of Northern Illinois University pursuant to the NIU Law, NIU Constitution hereby under the guidance of the Board of Trustees;, the Bylaws of the Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University; and

FURTHERMORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Chair appoints and the Board of Trustees confirms Trustee Robert Boey as Chair and Dr. Alan Rosenbaum as Co-Chair of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee; and

FURTHERMORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board appoint Parker Executive Search to assist with Northern Illinois University’s presidential search; and

FURTHERMORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Trustees adopts the attached charge to the Presidential Search Advisory Committee and the established timeframe for presentation of the list of qualified candidates to the Board of Trustees, with a proposed start date of no later than July 1, 2013.
