Online Philanthropy Event Could Benefit DeKalb County Nonprofits

DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, DeKalb County Community Foundation

An online philanthropy event next week could help raise more than $100,000 for DeKalb County nonprofit groups, according to community foundation officials.

The DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership and the DeKalb County Community Foundation are hosting Give Local DeKalb County for the third year in a row. The online event -- a local subset of Give Local America -- benefits area nonprofit organizations from social services to arts and culture and generated about $189,000 last year.

“If the 68 nonprofits that are participating in Give Local DeKalb County this year would fall off the face of the Earth, I think our community would be shocked about what the gap would be,” said Anita Zurbrugg, program director for the community foundation.

Zurbrugg says the event is especially important this year for area nonprofits because a lot of them are not getting funds from the state due to the budget impasse.

“And so access to unrestricted funds are especially more meaningful to our local nonprofits,” she said.

Zurbrugg says there are about 130 active nonprofit groups in DeKalb County.

The online event goes from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. Zurbrugg says community members without internet access also can give in person from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the foundation office, 475 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.
