Rockford Republican Enters The Race For Lieutenant Governor

A former candidate for Rockford mayor is running for lieutenant governor. Brian Leggero announced Wednesday that he was asked by Republican gubernatorial candidate William J. Kelly to be his running mate.

Leggero says the lieutenant governor has a number of important responsibilities, such as leading the Main Street program and the Governor's Rural Affairs Council. And there's another issue he'd like to tackle: human trafficking. He says he would form a state commission on sex trafficking, which he sees as a huge issue in Illinois and internationally.

Leggero met Chicago-based radio host Kelly during his run for Rockford mayor. He calls Kelly trustworthy and good-hearted with a lot of great ideas to get Illinois back on track. Incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has not yet said he will run for re-election.

Leggero isn’t the only Rockford politician running for lieutenant governor. Last month, state Rep. Litesa Wallace said she would team up with Democrat Daniel Biss in his pursuit of the governor’s office.
