State Police Investigating Death at State-Run Facility

Illinois State Police

The Murray Developmental Center was a big issue in Southern Illinois during last year’s gubernatorial race.

Former Gov. Pat Quinn had vowed to close the residential center, at the urging of some disability advocates.

The guardians of the people who live there -- and the residents in the area -- pushed back and, during the campaign, current Gov. Bruce Rauner pledged to keep Murray open.

Department of Human Services spokeswoman Veronica Vera says a resident died there on Monday.

“During the course of the investigation the staff became concerned," she said, "and so the Office of the Inspector General conducted an investigation and has now referred the matter to the Illinois State Police.”

Vera says she can’t disclose any more details about the resident or the continuing investigation.

But the president of the Murray Parents Association says he was a man in his late 40s.

She says he died of a heart attack, and the investigation is just a formality.
