Illinois State Police say the suspect in the slayings of five people at a home in a west-central Illinois is dead.
State Police Lt. Col. Todd Kilby said Wednesday morning that the suspect died after a car chase and an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Kilby spoke to reporters in the village of Manchester where the killings took place on Wednesday morning. Kilby says the suspect was in possession of multiple weapons as he fled. He did not identify the suspect by name.

Besides the five people slain, a 6-year-old girl was wounded and taken to a hospital in Springfield, about 50 miles east of Manchester.

Kilby declined to discuss a possible motive or the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

The murders happened inside a public housing complex.
