Fire officials say a wildfire in LaSalle County is no longer burning. The situation caused road closures Tuesday and prompted warnings for people with breathing difficulties.
Utica's Fire Chief told WNIJ news Wednesday morning that the blaze burned at least 150 acres. He says while the matter is still under investigation, they believe the flames spread from a compost fire on someone's property.
The fire east of Utica was first reported around 1:00 Tuesday afternoon. It was in the area near Starved Rock State Park. Heavy smoke along Dee Bennett Road caused police to close the roadway because of visibility problems. The National Weather Service also warned that the plume of smoke could hamper drivers on portions of I-80 and I-88. People with respiratory difficulties were also warned about the increased hazard.
