Following the Florida high school shooting that left 17 dead, Democrats in the Illinois House plan to take up a package of gun safety measures this week.

Another state lawmaker is targeting weapons like the AR-15,  a  popular semiautomatic rifle used in the recent Florida school shooting.  Sen. Ira Silverstein, D-Chicago, filed a bill that would ban "assault weapons." 

“I don’t know why people need these guns in the first place. They’re highly sophisticated, powerful guns.”

Quinn Renews Call For Tighter Gun Laws

Illinois lawmakers are being asked to revisit a bill that would impose tighter gun restrictions. On Sunday, Governor Pat Quinn again called for passage of a measure that would ban the sale or delivery of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition.

Illinois law enforcement agencies are divided on whether the state should ban the sale of so-called “assault weapons.” During a hearing this week in Springfield, supporters of the ban, like Sergeant Mark Marianovich of the Chicago Police Department SWAT team,  say assault weapons pose too great a threat.
