State Rep. Derrick Smith Convicted Of Taking Bribe

Jun 10, 2014

An Illinois lawmaker was found guilty Tuesday of taking a $7,000 bribe.

Federal authorities say State Rep. Derrick Smith, a Chicago Democrat, took the bribe in exchange for supporting a daycare center’s application for state money.

The FBI secretly recorded Smith with the help of an informant who helped arrange the bribe. Smith’s defense attorney says the informant pushed the bribe. He says Smith wouldn’t have sought it out.

A federal judge says she expects attorneys to make their closing arguments in the bribery trial of an Illinois state representative Monday.

Prosecutors allege State Representative Derrick Smith took $7,000 in exchange for writing a letter of support for a grant application.

They put an FBI agent on the stand - who told jurors that after Smith was arrested - he took agents to his house and handed over some of the alleged bribe money that he kept in a cedar chest.

The agent says Smith told him that he did it “for the people.”

Lawmaker Denied Delay In Corruption Trial

May 22, 2014

Neither politics nor back pain will delay the start of State Representative Derrick Smith’s federal corruption trial next week.

The Chicago Democrat is also supposed to be in Springfield for the closing days of the legislative session.

Smith’s lawyer - Vic Henderson - wanted a delay for his client.

"He thought it was critical to be there for the last several days in order to represent the people in his district, and he made a request to do that," Henderson said.

But Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman says he should have planned ahead - and denied the request.

State Representative LaShawn Ford stands accused of 17 counts of bank fraud and lying to the bank. Federal prosecutors say the Chicago Democrat took out a line of credit worth a half million dollars starting in 2006 from the now-failed ShoreBank. Ford owns a real estate company.

Illinois House expels Rep. Derrick Smith

Aug 17, 2012

For the first time in more than a century, the Illinois House has voted to kick out one of its members.

Derrick Smith, a Democrat who had represented the west side of Chicago, is charged with taking a $7,000 bribe in exchange for helping a daycare secure a state grant.

Although he's fighting the charge in court, legislators say his removal is warranted because it's clear he crossed the line.
