hospital merger

A Rockford hospital system is expanding…and the project is being called one of the biggest capital projects in the city’s history.

MercyRockford Health System has only existed since January...that’s when Rockford Health System and Janesville, Wisconsin-based Mercy Health System merged. Now the health care provider is moving forward with a massive project: a $400-million makeover. And that means building a new hospital on Rockford’s far northeast side, focusing on women and children. It will also be a high level trauma center.

The biggest health system in the DeKalb area is joining Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. That’s if a plan wins approval by state regulators.

KishHealth System and Northwestern Memorial Health Care announced they’ve agreed to join together. Their boards issued a joint statement about the proposed merger Wednesday. This means Northwestern Medicine would expand to include a total of six hospitals and 90 locations in northern Illinois.

Plans by OSF St. Anthony Medical Center to acquire Rockford Health System have been called off, just days before officials from both sides were to testify at a Federal Trade Commission hearing in Washington, D.C.
