The Supreme Court won't hear an appeal challenging Illinois' system for issuing permits for people to carry concealed weapons in public.

The justices on Monday let stand a lower court ruling that upheld the state's requirements for obtaining a concealed-carry license.

Three men sued state officials after they said a state review board denied their permit requests without offering an adequate explanation. After the state amended its regulations in 2015, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the new requirements.

Numbers from the Illinois State Police show the agency granted far fewer concealed carry permits statewide in 2015 than in 2014.

About 55,500 permits were granted statewide during 2015. That's compared to about 95,500 in 2014, the first year of the program.

NIU's Board of Trustees voted Thursday to adopt a university-wide concealed carry policy. It keeps the existing practice of prohibiting guns on campus.

The policy also outlines places where firearms can be stored. The primary place for a weapon is in a parked vehicle within a locked case out of plain view in an unrestricted parking lot. Firearms may also be stored with the NIU police department.
