Today is primary election day in Illinois. In addition to selecting candidates to represent their parties, Illinois citizens are voting on a variety of county and municipal referenda. WNIJ will bring you election results after the polls close this evening, starting at 7pm. WNIJ's Dan Klefstad will host our coverage. He'll be joined in the studio by NIU Political Scientist Matt Streb, on-hand to analyze today's results. We'll also have field reports from WNIJ's Susan Stephens and Guy Stephens
A number of candidates are running unopposed in their party’s primary. In some cases, there is no one running in the other party’s primary, either. That could mean that, for some candidates, the fall election will be a mere formality.
Thousands of caregivers, child protection workers, and police officers represented by the AFSCME will hold a statewide “Day of Action” Thursday. The events will demonstrate opposition to Governor Pat Quinn’s budget cuts. Employees of the Singer Mental Health Center will hold a protest Thursday afternoon at Rockford's Zeke Giorgi Center. The Singer facility is targeted for closure.
The new 16th Congressional District includes parts of Rockford, Dekalb, LaSalle and areas south of Chicago. It's been represented since 1993 by Rockford-area Republican Don Manzullo. His opponent is fellow Republican representative Adam Kinzinger. In a recent interview with WNIJ, Kinzinger touted his accomplishments during his short time in Washington. "I've been in Congress for 13 months. We've changed the conversation since we've been there, myself and the freshman class, from how much more we're going to spend, how much we're going to cut and how we're going to pay for things."
