Northern Illinois farms are gearing up for the apple and berry-picking season.

Woodstock tops the state with six orchards; city council member Maureen Larson says there are many reasons why the groves are so concentrated there.

“It’s a long term investment [for farmers]," she said. "You don’t plan an apple tree and turn around and start making profit right away. These are people who are invested in our county and our community."

The groves bear more than 20 different apple types. Larson says that's more than what's available at local grocery stores.

We’ll find out Thursday if spring is around the corner, and some northern Illinois residents have a milestone to celebrate this Groundhog Day.

It’s the 25th anniversary of filming for the movie “Groundhog Day,” and Woodstock residents live in the heart of where it was filmed.

The movie, starring Bill Murray, follows a reluctant weatherman sent to cover a story who becomes doomed to find Groundhog Day keeps repeating itself.

Each year, Woodstock residents have days of festivities planned around the holiday.

Yep...it's that time again. The city’s annual Groundhog Days.

The northern Illinois community square served as the focal point of the 90s movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray. In the movie, Murray's character re-lives the same day over and over again.

Ever since then, residents and tourists congregate in the town square every year to re-live places made famous by the movie.

Organizer Rick Bellairs says most of the activities are free, including a Groundhog Day Dinner and Dance.

The former principal of a northern Illinois middle school has been charged with forgery and theft.

Authorities say Jerome Wakitsch of Woodstock unlawfully withdrew thousands of dollars from various non-district bank accounts associated with the Parent Teacher Organization and the Fox Valley Junior High School Conference.

Authorities say Wakitsch, who was an authorized user for both accounts, forged the signature of another authorized user on checks for the PTO account. Police said the stolen funds were allegedly used for personal gain.
